If you're renovating your kitchen, chances are you've come across Howdens worktops — they're one of the most widely used ranges in the UK, fitted in thousands of homes every year. But are they actually any good? As a team that's supplied and fitted worktops across Stroud and the South West for over a decade, here's our honest, no-nonsense take.
What Howdens Actually Offer
Howdens produce a wide range of worktop materials, covering most budgets and styles:
- Laminate — the most popular choice, affordable, available in a huge range of finishes including realistic wood-effect, stone-effect, and solid colours
- Compact laminate — denser, more durable, better resistance to heat and moisture than standard laminate
- Solid wood — genuine timber worktops, needs more maintenance but ages beautifully
- Worktop upstands and edging strips — matched trims to finish the installation properly
The Good
Genuinely solid quality for the price. Laminate worktops have come a long way — modern finishes look far more convincing than they used to, and the core board underneath is consistent and reliable to work with as an installer.
Wide choice of finishes. Whatever kitchen style you're going for, there's usually a close match — from classic oak to contemporary matte stone-effect.
Consistent supply. Because they're such a widely stocked range, availability tends to be reliable, which matters when you're trying to keep a renovation on schedule.
Where To Be Careful
Not all finishes are equal. Some of the lower-cost laminate options show wear faster around sink and hob cut-outs if they're not sealed and fitted properly — this comes down to installation quality as much as the material itself.
Compact laminate costs more but is worth it near sinks and hobs. If budget allows, we'd usually recommend upgrading to compact laminate for the areas that take the most heat and moisture, and using standard laminate elsewhere.
Fitting quality matters more than people expect. A worktop is only as good as its installation — poor cutting, sealing, or joint work will let down even the best material. This is the single biggest factor in how a worktop performs and looks over time.

For most kitchens, Howdens worktops are a genuinely solid choice — good quality for the price, wide range of finishes, and reliable to work with. Where we'd push back is on the idea that the material alone determines the result. We've seen the same worktop range look brilliant in one kitchen and disappointing in another, purely down to how it was measured, cut, and fitted.
